A prostate biopsy is a medical procedure where small samples of tissue are taken from the prostate gland for examination. It helps in diagnosing or ruling out conditions such as prostate cancer.
Before the Biopsy
Preparation:
You may be asked to stop taking blood-thinning medications. Please check with your doctor for specific directions.
Take Ciprofloxacin (antibiotic) 500mg twice daily the day before your procedure, day of your procedure, and the day after your procedure
Use a Fleet enema to clean your rectum the morning of your procedure.
Communication: Inform your healthcare provider about any allergies or current medications.
During the Biopsy
Positioning: You will lie on your side with your knees drawn up towards your chest.
Local Anesthetic: A local anesthetic will be applied to numb the area around the prostate.
Biopsy Needle: A thin, hollow needle is inserted through the rectum or perineum to collect tiny samples of prostate tissue.
Possible Risks
Bleeding: Minimal bleeding is common but should subside.
Infection: Rare, but antibiotics are prescribed as a precaution.
After the Biopsy
Recovery: You may experience some discomfort or mild bleeding afterward.
Rest: Rest at home for the remainder of the day and avoid strenuous activities.
Results: May take a few days.
Follow-up: Your healthcare provider will discuss the results with you and determine the next steps.
