Penile Cancer

What Is Penile Cancer?

Penile cancer is a rare type of cancer that affects the skin or tissues of the penis. It usually happens in older men (over 50), but younger men can get it too.

What Causes It?

  • HPV virus (a common sexually transmitted infection)

  • Not keeping the penis clean (poor hygiene)

  • Having a tight foreskin (phimosis) that can’t pull back

  • Smoking (increases risk)

  • Weak immune system (like from HIV)

What Are the Signs?

  • A painless lump, sore, or wart-like growth (often on the head or foreskin)

  • Redness, rash, or skin changes

  • Bleeding or bad-smelling discharge

  • Swelling in the groin (if cancer spreads)

How Is It Treated?

  • Surgery (removing the tumor or part of the penis if needed)

  • Radiation (using high-energy rays to kill cancer)

  • Chemo (medicine for advanced cases)

  • Laser/cold therapy (for small cancers)

Can It Be Prevented?

✅ Get the HPV vaccine (helps prevent cancer-causing HPV)
✅ Wash regularly (keep the area clean)
✅ Use condoms (lowers HPV risk)
✅ Quit smoking
✅ See a doctor if you notice any unusual changes

The Good News:

If caught early, most men survive and recover well. But ignoring symptoms can make it worse.

If you see anything unusual on your penis, see a doctor right away!
