A non-invasive procedure that uses high-energy shock waves to break up kidney stones into smaller pieces that can be passed more easily.
Preparing for your Procedure
Medications: Inform your doctor about any prescription or over-the-counter medications you are currently taking. You may be instructed to stop taking certain medications before the procedure.
Food and Drink: You will be instructed to fast for a specific amount of time prior to the procedure. Follow these instructions carefully. Drinking plenty of water is recommended before the procedure.
Clothing: Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing. You may be asked to change into a hospital gown prior to the procedure.
Transportation: Arrange for someone to drive you to and from the hospital or clinic, as you may feel drowsy after the procedure.
During the Procedure
Anesthesia: ESWL is usually performed under local anesthesia, but general anesthesia may be used in some cases. Your doctor will discuss the anesthesia options with you beforehand.
Procedure: During the procedure, you will lie on a table, and a machine will deliver shock waves to the kidney stone. You may feel some discomfort or pressure, but it should not be painful. The procedure typically lasts between 30 minutes and 1 hour.
After the Procedure
Recovery: You will be monitored for a short period after the procedure before being discharged. Some discomfort or soreness in the treated area may occur, but it should subside within a few days.
Medications: Your doctor may prescribe pain medication or antibiotics to help with discomfort or prevent infection.
Activity: Rest for the remainder of the day after the procedure and avoid strenuous activity for a few days.
Follow-up: Your doctor will schedule a follow-up appointment to monitor your progress and ensure the kidney stone has been successfully treated.
