Prostate Biopsy

What is a Prostate Biopsy?

A prostate biopsy is a medical procedure where small samples of tissue are taken from the prostate gland for examination. It helps in diagnosing or ruling out conditions such as prostate cancer.

Before the Biopsy

  • Preparation:
    •  You may be asked to stop taking blood-thinning medications. Please check with your doctor for specific directions.
    • Take Ciprofloxacin (antibiotic) 500mg twice daily the day before your procedure, day of your procedure, and the day after your procedure
    • Use a Fleet enema to clean your rectum the morning of your procedure.
  • Communication: Inform your healthcare provider about any allergies or current medications.

During the Biopsy

  • Positioning: You will lie on your side with your knees drawn up towards your chest.
  • Local Anesthetic: A local anesthetic will be applied to numb the area around the prostate.
  • Biopsy Needle: A thin, hollow needle is inserted through the rectum or perineum to collect tiny samples of prostate tissue.

Possible Risks

  • Bleeding: Minimal bleeding is common but should subside.
  • Infection: Rare, but antibiotics are prescribed as a precaution.

After the Biopsy

  • Recovery: You may experience some discomfort or mild bleeding afterward.
  • Rest: Rest at home for the remainder of the day and avoid strenuous activities.
  • Results: May take a few days.
  • Follow-up: Your healthcare provider will discuss the results with you and determine the next steps.
